An Erhu master and erhu educator, Wang Guo Tong learnt the erhu under Chen Zhenduo and Jiang Fengzhi, the disciples of the distinguished Liu Tiahua. Wang has been a well-known figure in the world of Erhu music since the 1960's. His innovative playing of the Sanmen Gorge Capriccio was hailed as 'having developed a new style in erhu playing' and 'setting a milestone for erhu performance'.
Wang was also invited to give lecures and to perform in more than thirty countries and regions all over the world. The orchestras he has collaborated with include the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the Kwansi Symphony Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and the Taipei City Chinese Orchestra.
Wang is currentyl the President of the Hong Kong Arts Centre, Visiting Professor of the Central Conservatory of Music, Honorary President and Academic Director of Beijing Su Ren-Wang Guo Tong Erhu School and the Advisor for the erhu Society under the Chinese Musicians' Association.
